Written in Rain III: A Porous Glossary
Entry 11 / 15
2 min read
In July 2026, as I opened The Softest Hard at Casa R.A.R.O, I shared a short glossary in my newsletter: the words that had shaped my gestures during the residency at Hangar. I wrote it first in Spanish, then let it pass into English.
It is a porous glossary. Where A Glossary of Glass defines the words of the workshop, this one defines the words of the practice: definitions meant to leak, ferment and be revised. Both end in the same place.
Language: organic matter capable of decomposing.
A porous glossary
Accumulate (Acumular): To gather fragments.
Scavenge (Carroñar): To digest discarded matter in order to nourish what has yet to germinate.
Compost (Compostar): To accumulate, ferment, and decompose in order to emerge.
Contaminate (Contaminar): To cultivate relationships.
Contradict (Contradecir): Evidence of decomposition. Truths occupying the same space.
Care (Cuidar): To create around a fragility.
Decomposition (Descomposición): A process of generosity, in which one form ceases to sustain itself in order to nourish another.
Untangle (Desenredar): To release the stories that can no longer find a place to take root.
Scale (Escala): A human fiction.
Stagnation (Estancamiento): Movement too slow to be recognised.
Ferment (Fermentar): To allow relationships to produce knowledge.
Humidify (Humedecer): A methodology for mutation.
Intimacy (Intimidad): A relationship built through sustained proximity.
Language (Lenguaje): Organic matter capable of decomposing.
Oxidation (Oxidación): A slow conversation through the movement of electrons. See What Glass Is for the electrons themselves.
Porosity (Porosidad): To be permeated by proximity. See How to Practice Porosity.
Proximity (Proximidad): The minimum distance required for something to be altered.
Residue (Residuo): Matter awaiting new alliances.
Revisit (Revisar): To water an idea.
Sediment (Sedimento): Where your past versions gather.
Suppurate (Supurar): An intelligence of deterioration.
Glass (Vidrio): An amorphous solid. See What Glass Is.

The next entry steps back from the torch, to the furnace, the kiln and the many other worlds of glass.
